The Sony Xperia XZ revives the 5.2-inch (130 mm) 1080p IPS LCD display with a pixel density of 424 ppi that was first seen in the Xperia Z2, but with a completely new panel that includes X-Reality for mobile technologies and Sony's TRILUMINOSTM display. Sony Xperia XZ has 3GB of RAM, a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 (MSM8996) chipset with four proprietary Kryo processors (2×2.15 GHz and 2×1.6 GHz), and an Adreno 530 clocked at 624 MHz for graphics rendering. Additionally, the Sony Xperia XZ features 32GB of internal storage for the single-SIM model and 64GB for the dual-SIM model, both of which can be expanded using microSD cards up to 256GB (in a hybrid slot for the dual-SIM edition).

The Sony Xperia XZ is one of the first two Sony smartphones with a USB-C port for charging and data transfer, together with the Xperia X Compact. It is powered by a non-removable 2900mAh battery. It is equipped with Qnovo adaptive charging technology and supports QuickCharge 3.0.

The Sony Xperia XZ back camera is equipped with a new multi-aspect 24.8 MP Sony Exmor RS image sensor, formally known as the Sony IMX300. It's 23 megapixels, 1/2.3-inch sensor, and f/2.0 aperture are similar to those of the Xperia Z5 series, Xperia X, and Xperia X Performance. With the Xperia XZ, Sony unveils Triple Image Sensing technology.
